Kohl attended the Aachen School of Applied Arts and studied at the academies in Munich and Stuttgart. In 1926 the painter moved to Berlin. As studio manager of the Berliner Tagblatt, he increasingly turned to artistic commercial graphics. Exhibitions at the Prussian Academy of Sciences followed. Kohl was a member of the Berlin Artists Association and the Munich Secession. From 1948 he worked again in Aachen and became head of the commercial graphics department at the Werkkunstschule. Further artists and styles: Werner Berg, Cubism, Max Beckmann, Hans Purrmann, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Robert Delaunay, landscape painting, portraiture, Expressionism, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Max Pechstein, Otto Mueller, Cuno Amiet, Emil Nolde, Kees van Dongen, Heinrich Campendonk
