Eduard Wimmer-Wisgrill was an important Austrian interior architect and designer around the turn of the century and in the first two decades afterwards, who was particularly successful as a fashion designer. With his designs he had a decisive influence on the style of the Wiener Werkstätte, As head of the fashion workshop at the School of Applied Arts, he influenced an entire generation of young students. Wimmer-Wisgrill began his artistic career as a private student of Koloman Moser. He then studied from 1901 to 1907 at the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Josef Hoffmann and Alfred Roller. In 1907 he founded the fashion department of the Wiener Werkstätte, which he headed for more than ten years. He was then appointed head of fashion and fashion drawing at the School of Applied Arts. Wimmer-Wisgrill created numerous designs for costumes and stage sets for the legendary Cabaret Fledermaus and was involved in the interior design of the Palais Stoclet. In the 1920s he spent some time in New York and Chicago, where he created costume designs for theaters and taught at the Art Institute in Chicago. In 1925 he returned to the Vienna School of Applied Arts, where he worked as head of the fashion master class and the textile workshop until 1955. Since he worked a lot for the theater and the Wiener Werkstätte was generally very experimental, his fashion creations appeared new and fresh, in contrast to standard contemporary fashion. In this context, Wimmer-Wisgrill's designs can definitely be seen as the next step in development, a comfortable and contemporary fashion emerged from the wide reform dress. Women's fashion in particular made great progress. What seems exciting in this context is that working at the arts and crafts school or at the Wiener Werkstätte was one of the few opportunities for women to actively participate in the art scene at the time. The academy remained completely closed to female students until 1920, the first female teacher was not appointed there until the 1940s. There were also some female students in Wimmer-Wisgrill's class. Among other things, he also trained Gertrud Kornhas-Brandt, who later founded the German Master School for Fashion in Munich. Further artists and styles: University of Applied Arts, University of Applied Arts, Franz Barwig the Elder, Wander Bertoni, Max Domenig, Adolf Frohner, Bruno Gironcoli, Zaha Hadid, Anton Hanak, Erika Giovanna Klien, Gustav Klimt, Hans Knesl, Oskar Kokoschka, Bertold Löffler, Dorit Margreiter, Koloman Moser, Dagobert Peche, Carl Otto Czeschka, Vally Wieselthier, Michael Powolny, Mathilde Flögl, Gustav Klimt, Carl Moll, Berthold Löffler, Oswald Haerdtl, Otto Prutscher, Lilly Reich, Gudrun Baudisch, Jutta Sika, Susi Singer, Maria Likarz, Carl Breuer, Richard Luksch, Emil Orlik, Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel
